Traditionally being a DJ was not an easy job. Before the advance in technology in recent years DJ professionals had to carry crates and boxes full of records and CDs to every event they went. In addition to that they had to physically own thousands of pieces of recorded music. In these days there was a sizeable investment required for anyone wanting to get into the industry. Not only did you have to spend thousands of dollars on equipment, but you had to spend thousands of dollars on equipment.
In recent times things have definitely changed. With the advances of modern technology, a person can now have access to hundreds of thousands of songs in the palm of their hands for less then $20 per month. On top of that, the cost of speakers and equipment has drastically gone down while the quality has drastically gone down. Now let's get one thing straight.......I'm not trying to dictate what someone should charge for their services but a typical rule of thumb is this:

"10% of the value of the equipment being used + the amount of time and energy invested into the service".
So it can ben said that a company providing $10,000 worth of equipment can charge $1,000 plus total hours invested billed at $20 per hour. The reality of the situation is that DJ equipment is not that expensive anymore. You can get a great sounding system with lighting and special effects for under $3000. At this rate the days of charging customers $1500- $2000 for a wedding are long over! From my many years of experience as a professional dj in Orlando Fl , I have come to realize that the average person spends between $600-$700 on a wedding DJ. The modern DJ company must be able to offer high quality service and provide good sounding equipment and lighting in this price range. The DJ companies that are able to do this will begin to flourish and expand while all the other DJs trying to gouge every client will find themselves out of work!
